Free things to do in Porto this weekend

Viewpoints, gardens, riverside walks and free events to fill a weekend in Porto without spending much.

Free things to do in Porto this weekend

Porto is one of the easiest European cities to enjoy on a small budget. Many of its best experiences — views, gardens, architecture, street life and a surprising number of events — cost nothing at all. Here is a weekend plan that keeps your wallet closed.

Walk the historic centre

The UNESCO-listed historic centre is a free open-air museum. Start at the cathedral square for views over the rooftops, wander down the steep lanes to Ribeira, and stroll the riverside. Step into São Bento station to see its huge blue-and-white azulejo tile panels showing scenes from Portuguese history — entry to the hall is free.

Cross the Dom Luís I bridge

Walk across the upper deck, shared with the metro, for one of the best views in the city, then descend through the gardens of Gaia. The lower deck connects Ribeira directly with the Gaia riverfront.

Gardens and viewpoints

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal are free, full of peacocks and shaded paths, with wide views over the Douro towards the sea. The Jardim do Morro in Gaia fills up at sunset with locals and visitors. Other favourite viewpoints include the Miradouro da Vitória near the old Jewish quarter and the Passeio das Virtudes gardens.

Tiled churches

Several churches have spectacular façades covered in azulejos, and you can admire them for free from the street: the Capela das Almas on Rua de Santa Catarina, the Igreja do Carmo and Igreja dos Carmelitas side by side, and the Igreja de Santo Ildefonso near Batalha.

The seafront at Foz

Walk or cycle along the river to Foz do Douro, where the Douro meets the Atlantic. The promenade, lighthouses, small beaches and rock pools make a lovely half day, and the walk continues to Matosinhos beach.

Street art and galleries

Look out for murals around the centre and the Rua das Flores. In the Miguel Bombarda arts district, many galleries are free to enter, and openings are often held on the same evening with a lively street atmosphere.

Free events

Every week Porto has free concerts, markets, talks, exhibitions, meetups and community walks. Museums sometimes have free days or hours, and summer brings outdoor cinema and festivals. Agenda Norte collects these each morning, so check what's on today, tomorrow and this weekend.

Saving tips

Use an Andante card for cheap metro and bus rides, drink tap water (it's safe), eat the prato do dia at lunch, and buy picnic supplies at the Bolhão market for a garden lunch with a view.
