Porto is a welcoming city for families. Portuguese culture is very child-friendly, restaurants are relaxed about little ones, and there is plenty to do outdoors.
Parks and gardens
The Palácio de Cristal gardens have peacocks, shaded paths and wide lawns — kids love chasing the birds (gently). The Parque da Cidade is huge, with lakes, ducks and space to run, and leads down to the sea. Serralves park has a small farm and a treetop walkway.
Beaches
Matosinhos has a long, sandy beach with lifeguards in summer, ideal for building sandcastles. The beaches at Foz are smaller and rockier, with rock pools to explore at low tide. The Atlantic is cool and can be rough, so always swim where lifeguards are present and watch the flags.
On the river
A short river cruise under the bridges is a fun way to see the city without little legs getting tired. The Gaia cable car is also a hit with children and gives great views over the wine lodges.
Museums and attractions
The World of Discoveries museum in Ribeira tells the story of Portuguese explorers with boat rides and interactive displays. Sea Life Porto, near the Parque da Cidade, is an aquarium with sea creatures. The Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre and other interactive spaces sometimes run hands-on activities.
Trams and trains
Riding the historic tram 1 along the river to Foz is a small adventure in itself. Metro trains are step-free and easy with prams.
Practical tips
The centre is hilly and cobbled, so a sturdy buggy or a baby carrier helps. Many restaurants offer half portions for children. Pharmacies are everywhere and very helpful. Bring a light jacket — evenings by the sea get cool.
Family events
Children's workshops, theatre, story times and festivals happen every week. Check Agenda Norte under Family for what's on today, tomorrow and this weekend.
