Between the Atlantic and the Douro, Porto is a great city for staying active. Whether you want to catch your first wave, run along the river or watch a football match, there is plenty to do.
Surfing in Matosinhos
Matosinhos beach, just north of the city and reachable by metro, is one of the best places in Portugal to learn to surf. Its waves are usually gentle and consistent, and several surf schools rent boards and wetsuits and offer lessons for beginners. The water is cool all year, so a wetsuit is essential.
Bodyboarding and SUP
Bodyboarding is popular on the same beaches. On calmer days, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are possible on the river and in sheltered spots.
Running and cycling
The riverside path from Ribeira to Foz and on along the seafront to Matosinhos is flat, scenic and popular with runners and cyclists. The Parque da Cidade has quieter loops through trees and around lakes. Porto also hosts big running events, including a marathon and half marathon.
Football
Football is a passion in Porto. FC Porto plays at the Estádio do Dragão, and match days bring a lively atmosphere to the city. Stadium and museum tours are available on non-match days. Boavista FC is the city's other historic club.
Hiking and climbing
For hills and trails, head out to the Paiva walkways or the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Indoor climbing gyms in the city offer bouldering sessions on rainy days.
Join a group
Group runs, beach workouts, cycling tours and sports meetups are a good way to meet locals. Check Agenda Norte under Sports for what's on today, tomorrow and this weekend.
